Chapter One: She Came To Me
All males are segregated at birth. For the first eighteen years of their lives. They never see or meet any females at all. They are raised in one of the Twelve Villages of The Clock. Taught one skill and The Book of Mothers throughout their youth. They are given sexual arousal blocking drugs in the drinking supply. The Book of Mothers is the only printed book found on the Surface. It is like the Bible to all males. There are no pens, pencils, or paper. Teaching a male to write is of course forbidden. All females are immortal and have wings. They live in a place called The Above and the males consider them to be like angels/gods. The extreme contrast, between the male and female perspective, of this World. Is one of the most unique aspects about it.
Chapter One: She Came to Me.
My eyes were meet with deep blue orbs of steel, upon entering the small hut. The conversation without words ensued immediately.
“Don’t say anything out loud… hurry and sit… we are running out of time. “
“Gee… hey, how are you… might have been nice.”
Moving swiftly to the small, short study table, never losing eye contact, with his intense consuming gaze.
“Please tell me… we are not going to have one last debate about this.”
“No… no debate at all… I have made up my mind.”
Kneeling on the cushion a crossed from him, I place my BOM on the table. Making sure to maintain eye contact.
“Hmm… something is telling me; I am not going to like this.”
“Open to… Book three, verse one nineteen… and read it to me.”
Breaking eye contact to find the Book and verse, I speak out loud.
“so how excited are you about tomorrow.”
“Excited and very nervous actually.”
“Yea, I am trying not to think about the nervous part… She is going to make you look in Her eyes you know.”
Our eyes lock once more, as his deep blue orbs, narrow with a twinge of shade. Soft sly grin creeps a crossed my lips as we stare for a second in silence. Glancing back down to read the verse. He says out loud.
“I fear not Mother’s judgement, I fear The Rivers Embrace.”
After reading the verse, I bring my eyes back to his gaze. Our conversation of thoughts continues.
“I am confused… Write therefore, what you see, of what is and is to take place?”
“OK… we will come back to that later, keep reading.”
“Why don’t you spit it out… you know you have this memorized anyways.”
I look back down and continue to read, as his voice fills my ears once more. Almost as if reading it with me.
“The path of a mortal is fear, the fools Embrace, driven by The Clock. Maybe True Love shall you find. True Love must be seen, you must fall to see. You must suffer to fall. You must Love to find eternity.”
I lift my head and eyes to meet the vast sea of blue found in his gaze. Nothing, no thoughts. Just those savage blue orbs peering deep within me. My thoughts defy me and just flow out.
“We are going to run tonight before Mother’s Embrace.”
“No… no, no, no… You can’t even find True Love without Judgement… but we are not taking part in the Rivers Embrace… we will be Selfers.”
“You… my most trusted, enlightened friend… are completely insane… If the Tiffs do not get us… the Dark Angels sure will…, are you trying to Fall to Darkness.”
“True Love must be seen… you must fall to see.”
“So, I was correct… you are insane.”
A snarky grin slips to the edge of his bold lips. Deep blue orbs widen as the thoughts continue.
“You know me… I question all of this… how they got flight and immortality… why I must suffer for the evils of those who came before me… why I should be willing to die for something I have never possessed.”
“You know you’re not helping your sanity plea right now… please tell me you are not serious about this… and if you are… Please for the love of Mothers… tell me you have a plan.”
“Yes, of course I have a plan… but we should talk about The Embrace.”
Looking away from him I glance down at the open book before me. Speaking out loud and making sure not to look back, into those consuming blue eyes.
“We have spent a long time studying this Book and to this day. I cannot decide if I have learned more from you, or the Book. You understand this Book, in a way, that I shall never possess. I promise you she will already know who you are. Just as I believe, you already know.”
Remaining silent and looking down at my Book. I wait for a response. Thinking to myself… do not look… do not make eye contact… make him say it out loud. I can feel, my minds perception of motion, slow time to the second. Do not do it… he must speak it out loud… Mother will already know. I turn the page and act as if I am reading. Waiting for his words. My mind becoming frantic with thought. I must not look… I know he knows… he just cannot say it. I suddenly blurted out loud.
“No, I will not look at you! You will speak to me.”
“It cannot be me.”
His voice was very calm and monotone. I turn the page once more and begin to read out loud. Directly from the Book of Mothers.
“From the twelfth house of The Clock, but once every six thousand years, shall come a red male know by his zeal.”
“Your wrong, all of you. Yes, I have heard it around the Village.”
“So, do you think for a second, that Mother will not hear it as well.?”
“Males do not have names and it is not even a name, it is a word.”
“I can give you at least twenty examples, over the last fifteen years, that your actions became that word.”
I raise my head to lock gaze, with the blue sea of knowing, that I find in his eyes. Our conversation of thoughts begins again.
“We do not have time for this… I need you to listen to me very carefully… and do not speak out loud again… I am not kidding.”
Remaining completely silent gazing deeply into blue orbs I listen.
“She came to me last night… she was so beautiful… deep green eyes… large black wings that cast a shadow around me… her face was framed by flowing blonde hair… her eyes consumed my every thought… I lost time as she began to speak to my mind without words.”
Shaking my head, I think.
“Wait… you spoke to a DarkangeL ?”
“She said GuardiaNangeL.”
“They do not have Black Wings.”
“As if I do not know that… will you shut up and listen… She said take nothing but village water as much as we can carry… travel only at night… stay hidden in day… drink nothing but Village water and ration it… the water is your purity… sexual depravity begins when the water ends… thus begins your suffering… it is all about the Living Waters… you and your friend share the same fate.”
As I stare blankly into the blue sea of his eyes. My thoughts yet again speak out against my will.
“"What does share the same fate mean?"
"You and the others keep telling me I will be Red. That would make you Red as well. So, we are truly in this together."
“This is truly insane ZeaL. The possibility of two Red at once is almost nil.”
“Don’t call me that!”
“Why… your Black winged Guardian Angel confirmed it for you.”
“Maybe she was a Dark Angel but is now a Guardian Angel.”
“You’re really stretching here and again not helping your sanity plea. Was that all she said?”
“We must find The Cave of Living Waters and only drink directly from the Blue Stream. We can never drink any other color Living Water than Blue. Always drink Blue. Then she just left.”
“Wait… do Red even take part in The Rivers Embrace?”
The pause in his thought, told me he was thinking, very hard on that question. His consuming gaze seemed to be lost. He quickly broke eye contact and began flipping pages frantically in the BOM on the table before him. Mumbling out loud in his normal calm tone.
“How could I have missed that?”
“Missed what? I say aloud.”
Speaking calmly out loud as he reads from the BOM.
“And the Red will stand witness of The Rivers Embrace and suffer for the sacrifice they shall never face.”
Our gazes lock once more as his thoughts come quickly. “It is so rare, I never really paid much attention to the Path of Red. This is far worse than I was thinking. If true we will never get a chance to run. Unless we ran before The Mothers Embrace. Meaning we would never know our color at all. What if we are not Red?”
As I stare blankly listening into the blue sea of his orbs. Daring to not think again as he goes on.
“Just wish I knew what they mean by suffering. We have never had to suffer. I mean… we know how much and why they hate the male gender. We know the Red are called to suffer most and for the longest. Either way… we cannot run.
Those steel blue eyes go silent. His gaze alone drives my mind to think.
“Can I speak? Now that I know, you are a few feathers short of flight?”
His eyes narrowed as a grin curled his lips.
“OK… speak.”
“Only if you promise to let me finish!”
His gaze was always just so pure. I have never been able, to silence my mind, like he can.
“Again… the last Red was only one thousand years ago. Still have a few thousand years to go. Much less two of them at once. Plus, the moment you are Embraced its over… from that moment only Judgement remains. You taught me that. If you are Red, I will most likely, never see you again.”
The silence in his eyes was truly amazing. The look he gave me, in that moment, shall never be forgotten. His voice was just so calm. It was like, a light went off, in his mind. His thoughts flowed freely.
" Your right... We run now. I have three extra water tubes. How many do you have?"
"Two."
"So... we have nine total?'
"Yes."
" Go now... fill all your tubes... I will do the same and meet you at the cave."
His exist was swift and his gaze was so pure. Should I follow him? Sitting alone, lost and questioning. His voice echoes in my mind.
" If Mother is right... I cannot be wrong! "
